The lakefront is one of Evanston's most precious resources. We have a responsibility to take care of it and are working to alert City Officials of our collective concerns.

The lakefront is Evanston’s most valuable asset. It’s a gem that belongs to all of us to enjoy every day of the year. It deserves and demands to be protected and preserved.

To ensure the lakefront’s natural beauty and to preserve open access members of SEA actively monitor development along the lakefront, as well as events and uses that are scheduled and requested. We believe in an active, healthy and vibrant lakefront, but not in overcrowding or misuse.

Please join our ongoing efforts to keep this jewel of Evanston shining for all.

Dear Council Members, Ms. Thompson and Honorable Mayor Biss,

The SEA now believes the council has overstepped in monetizing the lake front, taking public space and turning it into an overused site for large, lengthy festivals, athletic events, food events and the potential for a restaurant.  Some of the planned events will fully restrict the use of public land with fencing and the requirement of a ticket costing over $50.   The city has displayed a very aggressive calendar for lakefront use this summer and fall.  We are deeply concerned that this trend will continue and the idea of a “trial” two-day, ticketed festival will not be a one-year event.  Further, Northwestern University is adding events to their lakefront property, with will likely create added spill over into the same area.

Now, with a vote before the council to create a restaurant at the Arrington Lagoon, we wish to take the stand that we do not endorse the idea   Additionally, we also think it should be noted that several RFPs have gone out over the past few years to bring in a private tenant to that space and none have gone forward. Most recently none have even been offered.  To that end, the business community is saying that this is not a profitable venture so any argument that this can bring in meaningful tax revenue for the city is moot.

We are asking you to rethink your plans for all future lakefront events and how they impact our collective community asset.

Respectfully,

The Southeast Evanston Association Board Members
