Northwestern University recently applied for a permit with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to further expand its recreational center.
This application follows an announcement in March 2015, when NU shared plans to continue developing its new Lakefront Athletics and Recreation Complex to include new a new field house, locker rooms for varsity sports teams, portable seating and more.
The permit outlines plans to construct a Lakefront Athletic and Recreational Complex along Lake Michigan in its Evanston campus, to be located between North Campus Drive and Lake Michigan and expand upon the currently existing Henry Crown Sports Pavilion.
Members of SEA, along with the Evanston Parks and Lakefront Alliance (EvPLA), NoParkSale.org, Central Street Neighbors, and many individual Evanston residents strongly oppose NU’s plans to expand, saying that the University is infringing on public land, as Lake Michigan belongs to the public.
